PortaZine}OKOLO Vienna Only Magazine

The third number of OKOLO magazine is on travellers’ note since we went for a trip to the former imperial city of Vienna. Renowned for Art Nouveau, traditional crafts, architect Adolf Loos, gigantic schnitzels, and delicious coffee, the city prepared for us a series of unique encounters thanks to which we were able to form our own perspective of the Austrian capital. Thus, OKOLO Vienna Only brings a selection of articles, reports, editorials and photo essays that, in our opinion, deal with the most interesting places, people, and objects in Vienna. We found hidden masters and their crafts, young perspective designers, and passionate collector who preserve their treasures concealed in secrecy. The result is a monothematic magazine which, however, reflects all our interests thanks to the diversity of individual articles – this time, with a single exception, exclusively in the centre of the genteel city on the river Danube. You can find here reports from workshops of Carl Auböck, shoemaker Georg Materna and Thomas Posenanski, photo editorial from unique cycling collection of Michael Embacher, essay about Viennese utopian architects or short interview with Marco Dessí. Illustrated survey of Austrian design icons and guide for the traditional Viennese fashion is also included. And much more.

OkoloMono font was designed by Jan Novák for the magazine only. (about it in the next post)

Thanks all the collaborators and contributors!

A Design for Life} Slow Breaking News

For my Masters in Graphic Design thesis project at New England School of Art and Design, I designed and stitched breaking news stories into cross stitch samplers. I juxtaposed content that is extremely fast and ephemeral (breaking news stories) with a very slow and archival medium (cross stitch). I wanted to see how this transference of medium affects the message of these stories and highlights the absurdity of the way stories are reported in the media and the way we consume them.

Each piece took about 25 hours to stitch. I used source imagery (scroll down in this post to see some of the images) from TV broadcasts and news websites. Since I only roughly sketched out the designs of each before I started stitching, much of the designs are improvised, and much of that stitching time was spent contemplating form and color, not just manual work. I came to think of cross stitching as a very slow mode of drawing. I completed 6 of these over about 4 months.

I think of the process of cross-stitching news stories as a kind of "test", as in: does x, y or z news story pass the cross-stitch test? A year or two later, does the story still have enough relevance to not seem absurd archived in this permanent and time-consuming (~25 hrs each) medium?

This Summer (2011), I worked on documenting the work that I did in the Studio phase. For this documentation I created a visual identity for the pieces under the title "Slow News", a play off of the Slow Food Movement. Slow News is an alternative to the fast-breaking online news cycle that puts emphasis on speed rather than depth or accuracy. The existing news cycle encourages us to dip and out rather than sustain attention on anything for a significant time. After thinking about what Slow News could mean for a while, I looked up the term, not expecting to find anything. But one extremely relevant article did come up, by Walter Shapiro for Politics Daily. This was very useful in my documentation process.

My documentation consists of three handmade books with stitched covers made of cross stitch paper. Book one is research about media theory, book two is research about cross stitch history and art history and book three is documenting the final work. The last part of my documentation is a take-away DIY cross-stitch the news kit, allowing people to stitch their own headline.

Hand-stitched copies of these pieces can be created upon request contact me if you are interested!

D-I-Y} Easy Relief Printmaking

This easy (I promise!) printmaking tutorial is a great way to use up styrofoam meat trays that you are probably hoarding (or maybe that's just me...) and it would also be a fun craft for kids, as long as you did it outside. It's essential that you get water-based block printing ink (it costs about $3 a tube) - otherwise this tutorial goes from an "easy" to "the-reason-why-I-never-majored-in-Printmaking" tutorial because the cleanup is much more difficult for oil-based printmaking ink - that being said, if that's what you have on hand, go for it - actually, if that's what you have on hand, you are probably somewhat beyond styrofoam tray printing anyway!

There are some specific tools I recommend below, because they make the process a breeze - total cost if you buy them all - two brayers (rollers) plus block printing ink- is probably around $30, and you'll be able to use them for many future projects! I give some substitutions though.

Tools and Materials:

• 2 styrofoam meat/produce trays
• 1 pencil or pen
(used for rolling on the ink, substitute a mini foam roller from the hardware store)
• hard rubber or acrylic brayer
(used to printing the plate, you can also use a rolling pin)
• kraft paper

A Design For Life} 15 Beautiful Necessities

Next time you have to buy something boring like a fly swatter or a tape dispenser, consider buying an heirloom quality piece that will last for years. I like the idea of everything in a home being beautiful. In fact, I think I’d prefer to splurge on necessities that are well-made and lovingly designed than extra stuff I just don’t need. In the spirit of thoughtful consumerism, here are 15 beautiful necessities. Photo above from Mjölk.
